Summary
Developed within the framework of the Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and Management, this research explores the theme “Lousada, a town that educates and transforms.” The study analyzes dynamics with transformative potential promoted by the municipality of Lousada, inspired by the Educating Cities movement and guided by principles of equality, justice, inclusion, democracy, dialogue, and respect. Furthermore, it aims to contribute to the studies carried out under the UNESCO Chair (UniTwin Network) “Town/City that Educates and Transforms,” of which the Universidade Aberta is an integral member.
The general objective of this study is to discover and analyze the educational dynamics developed within the municipality, unfolding into three specific objectives: to identify and characterize these dynamics across different areas of intervention; to understand their scope; and to ascertain local officials' perceptions regarding their transformative potential. A qualitative approach was adopted, focusing on the analysis of municipal educational policies and programs. Data collection was carried out through the compilation of a documentary corpus and the implementation of semi-structured interviews.
The study concludes that Lousada asserts itself as a town that educates and transforms by promoting educational initiatives aimed at all ages and contexts, moving beyond its legally mandated competencies. This action demonstrates a broad understanding of the municipality's role in promoting inclusion, participation, and sustainable development, in line with the principles of Educating Cities. The analyzed dynamics reveal the contribution of education as a structural axis for local development and reinforce the transformative potential of municipal policies when guided by an integrated lifelong learning perspective.
