UNESCO Chair joins the Walk for Peace in Lisbon
The UNESCO Chair ‘The City that Educates and Transforms’, has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peace by joining the second edition of the Walk for Peace, held on 29 March in Lisbon.
Having participated in the Global Meeting for World Peace in December 2025, the Chair is now reinforcing its involvement in initiatives that promote civic awareness, dialogue and the building of fairer and more inclusive societies. This walk takes place against an international backdrop marked by tensions and conflicts, serving as a collective call for inner peace and brotherhood among peoples.
The initiative, organised by various movements and communities, including the Agostinho da Silva Academy and the World Community for Christian Meditation, brought together citizens from different backgrounds on a symbolic walk between Eduardo VII Park and Cais das Colunas. The gathering began with a moment of silence, followed by a meditative walk along Avenida da Liberdade, which also included a tribute to the victims of war at the monument to those who died in the Great War.
Isabel Baltazar, coordinator of the UNESCO Chair, has emphasised the importance of education and active citizen participation in building a culture of peace. In this regard, support for this initiative is in line with the Chair’s mission to promote ‘educating cities’, where ethical coexistence, inclusion and active citizenship are fundamental pillars.
More than just a protest, the Walk for Peace stood out as a symbolic and inclusive gesture, open to the entire population, regardless of beliefs or convictions. The central message emphasised that the transformation of the world begins with each individual, through conscious and supportive actions.
Through this initiative, the UNESCO Chair “The City that Educates and Transforms” reinforces its role as an active agent in promoting humanist values, contributing to the development of communities that are more aware, resilient and committed to peace.
