UNESCO Chair “The City that Educates and Transforms” Promotes Debate “For an Anti-Racist City” and Gathers Community in Santa Maria

On September 4, the Treze de Maio Museum, in Santa Maria/RS, hosted the panel “For an Anti-Racist City”, promoted by the UNESCO UniTwin Network The City that Educates and Transforms, led by ISEC Lisboa, in partnership with the Franciscan University (UFN) and the “Black Territory of Rosário” project. The event brought together teachers, students and the community of Bairro do Rosário.

Among the guests were Karlla Kamylla Passos, museologist and PhD in Museology from Lusófona University, and João Heitor da Silva Macedo, historian, director of the Museum and professor at the Federal University of Santa Maria.

The debates focused on the importance of preserving the memory of Santa Maria's black community and the role of museums as spaces for anti-racist struggle and education. Participants emphasized the need for actions that promote racial equality and the appreciation of diversity in the city.

The event also encouraged community participation in initiatives aimed at racial equality. Initiatives like this are fundamental to strengthen the fight against racism and building a more just society in Santa Maria.
