Aprender a Ser Journal Publishes Its First Issue on Global Citizenship, Interculturality and Sustainability

The first issue of Aprender a Ser: Global Citizenship, Interculturality and Sustainability was published in July 2026. The journal is directed by Isabel Baltazar, Scientific Coordinator of the UNESCO Chair The City that Educates and Transforms, based at ISEC Lisboa, and is intended for UNESCO Associated Schools in Portugal.

The project benefits from the executive collaboration of Escola Secundária de Maximinos, in Braga, a UNESCO Associated School and a European Parliament Ambassador School (EPAS). This partnership promotes synergies between European and Global Citizenship.

The journal was created to consolidate, systematise and disseminate good educational practices, drawing on UNESCO’s four pillars of education: Learning to Know, Learning to Do, Learning to Live Together and Learning to Be. The fourth pillar, Learning to Be, is central to the project, serving as a foundation for holistic education and fostering the development of ethical, critical, creative and socially responsible citizens.

Adopting a collaborative and transformative approach, the publication seeks to bring together the voices of students, teachers and communities, providing a platform for sharing experiences and reflecting on the challenges of Global Citizenship, Interculturality and Sustainability, in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and UNESCO’s values.

The journal also aims to highlight the work carried out by UNESCO Associated Schools in Portugal, encouraging students’ original, creative and critical contributions and promoting the exchange of initiatives that help shape a common future.

Published on a six-monthly basis, Aprender a Ser is intended to release two issues per year, in June and December. It seeks to establish itself as a platform for disseminating good educational practices and promoting transformative pedagogy capable of addressing contemporary social and environmental challenges.

The journal is directed by Isabel Baltazar and coordinated by Paulo Antunes and Carla Machado, from the UNESCO Associated School/EPAS Escola Secundária de Maximinos, in Braga. Ana Paula Oliveira, Director-General for Research and Development, Innovation and Sustainability at ISEC Lisboa, also contributes to the publication.

“Let us discover the ‘Perspectives on the City’. Together!” is the invitation behind this initiative, which reinforces the commitment of the UNESCO Chair at ISEC Lisboa to education that promotes citizenship, intercultural understanding and the construction of a more sustainable future.
