Portugal-France, shared memories

Professor Isabel Baltazar, PhD, Coordinator of the UNESCO Chair "The City that Educates and Transforms" led by ISEC Lisboa, will participate in the conference "Portugal-France, shared memories". The event will take place on February 18, at 6:30 PM, at the Château de Flers in Villeneuve d’Ascq, Lille.

This initiative is organized by the Société Historique de Villeneuve d’Ascq and Almada Mundo, bringing together researchers, professors, students, and community representatives from both countries to highlight the historical, cultural, and human ties between Portugal and France.

Professor Isabel Baltazar—a faculty member at ISEC Lisboa, researcher in citizenship and European culture, and head of the UNESCO Chair—will emphasize the roles of education, historical memory, and cultural cooperation in building active citizenship and a shared European space.

The conference will recall significant moments of the Portuguese presence in the region, such as the participation of the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps in the liberation of Ascq in 1918. It will also address broader dimensions of their common history, including the integration of Portuguese communities in France, cultural exchanges, and the European ideal championed by Victor Hugo.
