Interaction Design for Peri-Urban Territories: Participation, Heritage, and Collective Experiences
Speaker: Filipe Cruz. March 20, 2026 - 6 p.m. (PT) / 3 p.m. (BR).
Social dynamics have undergone profound transformations as a result of digitalization, often rendering face-to-face interactions more ephemeral. In this context, physical spaces and place-based forms of social interaction regain renewed relevance in fostering meaningful connections. Peri-urban areas—where rural and urban elements merge in a dispersed manner—emerge as an ideal setting to rethink identity and sense of belonging. This presentation reflects on how interaction design can intervene in these dynamics by facilitating communication and strengthening proximity between residents, visitors, and the place itself. From this perspective, Café Central is introduced as a conceptual model that invites reflection on the vitality of these territories. The proposal establishes connections between design, community, and tourism experience, encouraging the recognition of local richness through shared moments and collective experiences.
